Last night I watched the seventh game of the NBA semi-finals (a re-run). With six minutes left, the teams were tied. And that’s when it got rough…under the boards: Elbows in the gut. Knees in the back. Shoving, muscling, overpowering. Bruising!
Only one thing counted: Getting control of the ball – without getting caught by the ref.
Then it occurred to me – Hey, life under the boards is a lot like doing business in the Marketplace: No rules. Just do whatever it takes to get control. Get the job done. Don’t get caught…Win.
Proverbs describes a similar environment, so typical of many sectors in the Marketplace,
“Wicked men…whose words are perverse…who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.” (Pro. 12:a-15)
As a follower of Christ what am I to do? Flee? Join a monastery? Pretend it doesn’t exist?
No, just the opposite. Notice Jesus’ prayer to the Father, and His instructions to the Twelve,
“My prayer is not that you take out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one…I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Jn. 17:15; Matt. 10:16)
The way to survival; the way to victory, is to become a person in passionate pursuit of God’s wisdom,
“If you accept my word and store up my commandments within you, turning your ear to wisdom, and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and search for it as for hidden treasure…” (Pro. 2:1-4)
then you will make it in the Marketplace. Because it is to such a person that,
“The Lord gives wisdom…knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright…He guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful one. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair…For wisdom will enter your heart…Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse.” (Pro. 2:6-12, excerpts)
QUESTION: Do you want to succeed in the Marketplace in a manner pleasing to God? Only a passionate pursuit of Him and His wisdom will make it possible. Are you up to the challenge?
My prayer is that you are having a great week!Views: 336
